HARRISBURG -- Retired Air Force Col. William C. Hise died Thursday, according to information from Southeastern Illinois College.
Hise and his brother, the late Air Force Brig. Gen. James C. Hise, became the largest benefactors to SIC when they donated nearly $3 million for the construction of the Ella Elizabeth Hise Museum of Regional Art. The museum opened Aug. 23, 2019 and honors the Hise brothers' late sister, Ella Elizabeth Hise, who was the former Director of Arts for Harrisburg Schools.
Ella Elizabeth later worked for Eastern Illinois State College, then served on every state committee for art progression in elementary and secondary schools. She was appointed to Gov. Dwight H. Green in 1948 to be the Superintendent of the Art and Textile Division of the first post-World-War II Illinois State Fair, where she received nationwide recognition showing the innovation of American women in designing and using feed sacks for dress materials.
Her career featured a long list of awards and accolades. She died on Aug. 27, 1962, after a long illness.
