CARTERVILLE -- Walker's Bluff Casino Resort is committed to establishing a formal program to recruit and develop local businesses as potential vendors, with a special focus on identifying women, disabled, minority, and veteran-owned businesses.

In support of this commitment, two local, woman-owned businesses -- KLG Grant Consulting in Carbondale, and Russell Business & Financial LLC of DuQuoin -- have partnered to offer the workshops and connect businesses with the information and resources needed to build their capacity. Individuals who are interested in starting a small business are encouraged to attend.

The workshop is 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19.

Originally, the workshops were being conducted in-person; however, due to COVID-19 they now are being held using a virtual platform.

The virtual vendor workshop

• Steps to becoming a certified minority, woman, disabled or veteran owned business. This certification will allow marginalized business owners opportunities to provide services or products to governmental instrumentalities, nonprofits and various for-profit organizations.

• Opportunities on becoming a member/owner of work-cooperatives that are currently being developed in the southernmost region of Illinois. Available work-cooperative opportunities will include janitorial, housekeeping and ground maintenance, child care, health care, and gardening/farming cooperatives.

• Services provided by the Southern Illinois University's Small Business Development Center. The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Southern Illinois University provides no-cost, confidential, one-on-one business advising services, training opportunities and business resources for entrepreneurs in southern Illinois.
