Chester food pantry hosts first mobile market since March

The Chester Area Christian Food Pantry Mobile Market drew about 80 cars when it was held June 24.

Volunteers organized the food in four different groups, or "stops" to keep the line moving.

The event, with food donated by the St. Louis Food Bank, was the first such event since mid-March when the coronavirus pandemic forced social distancing began.

The cars visited the Mobile Market at the Cohen Recreational Complex, and most trunks and back seats were full of groceries once they made it to the end of the food distribution line.

Fifteen adults and the Grace Church Youth Group handled the food distribution and greeted clients.

Youth group director Jenny Brown said the kids' summer mission trip and Church Camp were canceled due to the pandemic.

"Our youth were really wanting to help out in the community," she said. "When we got the call to offer assistance at the CACFP Mobile Market it was just what the kids needed!"

The CACFP served approximately 200 families during the month of June. The pantry is open Mondays and Wednesdays at the Koeneman Acres site.

People wishing to make either monetary or food donations are welcome.

During July, canned spaghetti, cereal and jelly in plastic jars are particularly needed.
