Sheila Simon to run for Luechtefeld seat

The Du Quoin State Fair ended on Labor Day as it began 10 days ago--very politically.

Sheila Simon announced during the annual Du Quoin State Fair Labor Day picnic she will be a candidate in 2016 for retiring Sen. David Luechtefeld's 58th District seat.

She made the announcement to a sea of union supporters.

"This governor is a particular challenge right now," she said. "The cuts that he's made so far are really cuts that effect the voiceless the most," says Simon.

Last year, Simon ran for Comptroller against the late Judy Baar Topinka and lost.

Before that she served on the Carbondale City Council where she also ran for mayor but was defeated.

Sen. Luechtefeld, an Okawville, Ill. Republican filled the unexpired term of the late Sen. Ralph Dunn of Du Quoin and will retire as a very senior ranking member of the Illinois General Assembly.

He choice to retire rather than move after redistricting took place last year.
