Girls at Harrisburg High School got a special treat Friday through a collective effort by several groups who came together to donate hundreds of Prom dresses to the school.

In the wake of the devastating Feb. 29 tornado, several groups contacted the school about donating Prom dresses, so teacher Janet Hart organized an event for girls to come try on and pick out a dress.

With help from students in her classes, Hart set up a dressing room area in Davenport gym and organized the hundreds of donated dresses into sizes and styles.

Hart said that between the donations from the St. Louis, Mo. based groups The Cinderella Project and the Fairy Glam Project, along with donations from Prom Relief for Harrisburg, which is a conglomeration of local churches and businesses, over 600 dresses were available at Friday's event. A variety of accessories, including shoes and purses, were also available. In addition, some men's suits and tuxedos were available for male students.

"Our mission is to grant Prom wishes one dress at a time," said Nikole Shurn, founder of the Fairy Glam Project.

A lot of wishes were granted Friday as a steady stream of giggly girls were picking out dresses, and over 70 girls had already picked out a dress within the first hour of the event.

"They're having so much fun," said Hart. "I'm hoping every girl in the school leaves with a dress."
