Jazz and strings featured in SIC's Cultural Arts Series
</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[The Southern Illinois University String Quartet will bring classical music, then New Arts Jazztet will bring jazz and then the two perform as New Arts Jazztet With Strings together 2 p.m. Sunday at the Southeastern Illinois College George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center lobby.
The quartet begins with three classical selections, followed by three jazz numbers and then six songs of the two combined musical groups.
The SIU String Quartet is comprised of SIU School of Music faculty performs chamber music and performs most frequently as part of the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society. The members are Michael Barta on violin, Victoria Moore on violin, Jacob Tews on viola and Eric Lenz on cello.
New Arts Jazztet has long been regarded as Southern Illinois' premier jazz group, performing original works and choice standards forged in the energy of neo bop and eclecticism of contemporary jazz. The members are SIU School of Music Faculty and include Dick Kelley on reeds, Bob Allison on trumpet and flugelhorn, Tim Pitchford on trombone, Mel Goot on piano, Phil Brown on bass and Ron Coulter on drums.
Music fans and students will have a chance to hear live classical chamber music and live jazz works in an upscale setting close to home. A coffee concert, there will be coffee, tea and desserts provided by the SIC Cultural Arts Series volunteers.
Tickets are $10 for adults and students are admitted free of charge.
