CHS football Quarterback Club's 'meat wheel' fundraiser is Jan. 26
The 2020 Chester High School Football season is only seven months away and the Chester Quarterback Club is preparing for its major fundraiser of the off-season to help buy the team some much-needed equipment. The even popular "Meat Wheel" event is just 11 days away and will be hosted at the Chester Eagles Club in Chester from noon to 4 p.m.

Movement for 51st state holds meeting Jan. 18 in Belleville
New Illinois Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to splitting Chicago away from the rest of Illinois, will host an informational meeting from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Adam's Auctions & Real Estate, 1550 E. State Route 15, in Belleville. The doors will open at 11 a.m., the event starts at noon.

Chester basketball team has memorable night at SIU game
The Chester High School boys basketball team made its annual pilgrimage to SIU Carbondale on Jan. 7 where they watched the Salukis beat Valparaiso in a Missouri Valley Conference battle. Chester Coach Brad Norman, his coaching staff, and his entire basketball program made the trip. In addition to an exciting game, Chester freshman basketball coach, Cody Mileur, was selected from the crowd to compete in the 3-point shot challenge -- and won; while another Chester coach, Jacob Cowan, demonstrated the most spirit in the Banterra Center to win a free Papa John's pizza. The entire Chester contingent had a great time.

Popeye Trail statues to get their own QR codes
The Chester City Council opened 2020 with news that the city's Beautification/Tourism Committee will buy QR codes for all the Popeye Character Trail statues. The codes will allow visitors to use their smartphones to access additional interesting information about each statue. The cost for the codes will be $600.

A cold shooting day for the Yellow Jackets and a hot day for Carterville's top scorer led to a 7-point loss for Chester in a nonconference game Jan. 11 at home.
