Down by 10 points in the early going, Harrisburg looked poised to go quietly into the night against Fairfield in the opening round of the Class 2A IHSA Girls' Basketball Regional at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium.
Instead of going quietly, the Bulldogs made some noise, rallied and took a one-point 22-21 lead before halftime.
That was as close as HHS would get as the Lady Mules would go on a 10-0 run from that point on and close out Harrisburg's season with a 52-40 win.
Lindsey Murray and Shleby Boer each had 12 points for the Bulldogs, while Ashley Ferrell chipped in with seven points. Malayana Douglas and Hannah Walker each finished with five points, while Hanna Jones and Brittny Banks each scored one point.
After taking a one-point lead on a pair of free throws by Murray with 1:10 to play in the second quarter, the Bulldogs wouldn't get another field goal until the fourth quarter with 4:05 to play when Boer buried an inside bucket.
Harrisburg was outscored 15-3 in the third period and could never rebound from a shaky start.
"We've had a quarter like that this entire season," HHS head coach Jake Stewart said of his team's third quarter. "I don't know if we came out nervous or flat to start the game, but we came to play in the second and then in the third, we just couldn't get a shot to fall. We had some turnovers and I know Fairfield switched up to a 1-2-2 zone (defense), but we just couldn't make anything."
Harrisburg went 0-6 from the field in the third quarter, including four turnovers and finished with 17 miscues in the game.
Fairfield will now play the winner of Hamilton County on Wednesday night in the semifinals at Eldorado High School.
