McKay, Glidewell, Yates, Applebey highlight All-State selections

Highlighted by a pair of selections in both Class 1A and 2A, southern Illinois was well represented in this year's Associated Press Class 1A/2A All-State Boys Basketball Team.

Named to the Class 1A First Team was Woodlawn senior Blake McKay. The McKendree basketball signee was AP All-State honorable mention last season and a repeat conference Player of the Year this season. McKay, a 6-foot-3 senior guard led the Cardinals in scoring with 22.8 points per game for a 31-4 "Sweet 16" sectional finalist.

McKay also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists to go with 80 steals. The 3-year starter scored 2,336 career points (2nd all-time in school history) and also ranks Top 10 on the school's career assists (354) and steals (233) lists and finished with 531 rebounds.

Goreville's Trent Glidewell was named to the 1A Second Team as the 6-foot-5 senior center ended the year as Black Diamond Conference MVP in the West, while averaging 11.4 points per game, 9.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 22 minutes for the 34-2 Blackcats. Gidewell owns 15 double-doubles for a squad that registered 15 running-clock victories this season. Glidewell is preparing to play baseball at Southern Illinois Edwardsville, following his senior season at Goreville.

Glidewell's teammate Landon Albright was one of three local players named to the Honorable Mention Team, joining Tamms Egyptian's Christian Trexler and Cobden's Noah Franklin.

In class 2A, Pinckneyville's Dawson Yates and Mt. Carmel's Kaleb Applebey were both named to the Second Team.

Yates, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, was an AP All-State Honorable Mention selection last season and was the leader of a 28-4 squad upset in the regional finals after being ranked 4th in the final AP state poll.

In his career, Yates has 1,576 points (2nd in school history); part of 3 straight regional champs, 10 tournament winners and the 2018 fourth-place state finisher in Class 2A.
