CHS Boys Golf wins Chester Invitational; first time since 2015

That the Chester High School boys golf team has been on a roll is an understatement. Now 4-0 on the season, the most impressive win was the latest, at the annual Chester Invitational Tournament. Until last week, Chester has not won its own tournament since 2015.

The Yellow Jackets outshot seven other teams for the victory and three golfers finished in the Top 5. Chester's undisputed top golfer, Jarrett James, was the tournament champion.

Eight teams played the 18-hole match at the Chester Country Club: Chester, Sparta, New Athens, Red Bud, Murphysboro, Steeleville, Trico and Zeigler-Royalton.

The Yellow Jackets finished with 326 strokes and were led by the junior James, who shot 70 on the day and won by four strokes over Trico's Eddie Brees (74).

Chester junior Jaden Mott, who shot 80, and senior Chett Andrews, who shot 83, finished in the Top 5 for the tournament.

Sophomore Kaden Freytag shot 93, freshmen Chance Mott shot 98 and sophomore Luke Miller shot 99.

Trico, 2nd place with 328 strokes. Eddie Brees (74), Tyler Compton (79), Logan Clelland (87), Peyton Lovel (88), Ross Coleman (88) and Zach Thies (90).

Steeleville, 3rd with 354 strokes. Eric Stegmann, Avery Hamilton and Jordan Wilson (all 88), Jack Knop (90), Reid Harris (95) and Dalton Rickenberg (97).

New Athens, 4th with 369. Owen Whitworth (84), Troy Hart (94), Noah Lintker (95), Mason Page (96), Joe Range (99) and Davin Schatte (126).

Red Bud, 5th with 381. Alex Kueker (86), Austin Grohman (95), Kendall Doiron (100), Owen Stallings (100), Ethan Fritsche (103), and Cole Booker (132).

Zeigler-Royalton, 6th with 400. Carter Maloney (90), Riley Cross (91), Wyatt Sherwin (106), Gunnar Hawkins (113), Seth Chwarczinski (114) and Nathaniel Furlow (134).

Murphysboro, 7th with 407. Eli Caraway (86), Nick Stoke (100), Jacob Hobbs (110) and Gage Martin (111).

Sparta, 8th with 429. Miles Parks (90), Parker Haskenhoff (106), Levi Kurtz (116), Eric Renner (117) and Kerry Kloos (120).

<b>Triangular match</b>

On Sept. 3 Chester hosted Anna-Jonesboro and New Athens at the Chester Country Club - another close match and another win. Chester had a team score of 167, Anna-Jonesboro finished with 168 and New Athens had 180.

Chester was led by Jarrett James, who shot a 37 one over par. Chett Andrews (40), Jaden Mott (42) Chance Mott (48), Luke Miller (52) and Clayton Andrews (57).
