Life On The Road: Eldorado, Harrisburg football have road-heavy schedules for 2019

With summer in full bloom, some thoughts are starting to turn to fall as the IHSA recently sent out high school football schedules.

It's a road-heavy schedule for both Harrisburg and Eldorado as the two teams have more away games than home games and in Harrisburg's situation, the Bulldogs only have three home games with an open date during the Week 3 portion of the season.

Harrisburg's open date is due to Booneville not renewing its contract that expired after last season.

HHS athletic director Greg Langley said that while he worked hard in the offseason to fill the vacancy, travel and school size were of the primary concern.

"Most all school's wanted a home-and-home game," Langley said. "That would have meant that next year, we would have had to travel to Woodstock North, Johnsburg or Richmond-Burton was one very large school, Belleville-East (a XA size school). We don't have a game yet for Week 3 and I do not foresee one right now. I have sent out other emails, but those schools were not interested."

The Bulldogs, who went 2-7 last year and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season, will open the 2019 slate on the road at Mt. Carmel on August 30.

Harrisburg will host Du Quoin on September 6, followed by an open date on September 13.

West Frankfort will come to Taylor Field on September 20th and Harrisburg will hit to the road to Massac County (September 27) and Benton (October 4), before hosting Murphysboro on October 11.

The Bulldogs will close out the season on the road at Herrin (October 18) and Carbondale (October 25th).

Eldorado has four home games and those are mostly backloaded on the schedule. The Eagles start the season with four of their first five games on the road as EHS heads to Johnston City on August 30th.

The Eagles will then host Chester on September 6th, before three straight road games, including a Saturday afternoon game at Vienna on September 14th, at Sesser-Valier September 20th and at Hamilton County (September 27th).

Carmi-White County comes to Boz Adams Field on October 4th and EHS goes to Christopher on October 11.

The Eagles will finish out the season at home with Edwards County on Saturday, October 19th at 1 p.m. and host Fairfield on October 25th.

Eldorado went 7-3 last season and has enjoyed six straight seasons being in the playoffs.
