Thompson garners SICA COY honors

Recently six Harrisburg basketball players were named to the Ohio Division All-Conference Team of the Southern Illinois River-To-River Conference and on Tuesday, three of those players were named All-South and one with a special distinction.

Juniors Isaac Crabb, Will Gibbs and Will Holland were all named to the team and head coach Jay Thompson was named 2019 SICA All-South Coach Of The Year.

In all, 38 players were named SICA All-South and represented 21 different high schools.

Joining Thompson as Coach of the Year were Steeleville's John Sutton (1A) and Carbondale's Scott Hanley (3A).

Thompson just wrapped up his 32nd season as the Bulldogs' head coach, in addition to going 30-9 this past season, Thompson has an overall record of 803-261, as well as, 20 IHSA regional titles, eight sectionals, seven super-sectionals and a state championship in 1989. Thompson also has four runner up finishes at the state tournament, as well as, a fourth place finish.

Player-wise, Crabb led the Bulldogs at the plate and on the mound as the 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior had a .458 batting average and an on-base percentage of .572. Crabb had 49 hits, including 43 RBI and a team-high three home runs. On the bump, Crabb was 7-3 with a .880 ERA . He allowed 13 runs (eight earned) on 26 hits over 63.2 innings. He struck out 79 and walked 25.

Gibbs was right behind Crabb at the plate as he hit .432 with 60 hits, including a team-high 48 singles and also had 48 runs scored. Gibbs drove in 27 runs and struck out seven times in 157 plate appearances.

Holland followed Crabb and Gibbs with the best batting average, finishing with a .369 and an on-base percentage of .450. He also had 48 hits, including 26 singles, 14 doubles, one triple and a team-high seven home runs. Holland wrapped up the season with 31 RBI and a team-high 57 runs scored.
