Lady Lions too much for Du Quoin girls

CARTERVILLE - Abbey Crain pumped in 20 points and had plenty of help as the Carterville High School girls basketball team trounced Du Quoin, 63-31, in an SIRR Mississippi Division game Tuesday night.

Alecia Doyle had 12 points and Megan Barton had 11 for Carterville, which improved to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in the conference with the win. Du Quoin fell to 6-12 overall.

Jeniah Thompson and Lexi Swalls both had seven points for the Lady Lions, who led 17-10 after the first quarter.

Du Quoin stayed within striking distance due to early 3-pointers from Chloe Hill and Delaynie Dearmond, although those two players didn't score the rest of the night.

Du Quoin was held to one field goal in the second quarter, a 3-pointer by Bailey Harsy, as Carterville went on a 21-5 run to build a 38-15 halftime lead.

Harsy, Katie Smith and Meryn Gross all hit 3-pointers for the Lady Indians in the third quarter, but Carterville still stretched its lead further with Crain scoring six points in the frame.

The Lady Lions led 57-29 going into the fourth period, which was played with a running clock.

Harsy led Du Quoin with eight points and Elizabeth Bird had seven.

Du Quoin plays at Benton on Thursday and then takes on Trico as part of the Black Out Night quadrupleheader with the boys on Saturday.
