Volunteers surge to two wins

CARTERVILLE - Vonnie Patterson pumped in 22 points to lead five players in double figures as the 11th-ranked John A. Logan College men's basketball team surged past Lewis and Clark, 76-55, Saturday afternoon at Brewer Gymnasium.

Jayden Scrubb added 13 points, while David Sloan had a monster double-double with 12 points and 17 assists. Jonah Jackson and Chris Harris added 10 points apiece for the Vols.

Logan moved up to 11-1 with the victory in the first game after being moved up to No. 11 in the NJCAA Division I national rankings.

Antwan Campbell had two points but pulled down eight rebounds for the Vols, who led 34-22 at the half.

Lewis and Clark (4-8) pulled to within eight points in the second half before the Vols went on a flurry to build a big lead.

Dawson Berry led the Trailblazers with 12 points. Jalen Morgan and Jaquan Adams added 10 each.

The Logan women also played Saturday and suffered a 73-65 loss to Mineral Area College.

The Lady Vols (6-7) were outscored 20-12 in the first quarter, but surged to a 37-33 halftime lead before getting outgunned in the second half.

Lyric Campbell led Logan with 22 points, five assists and six rebounds. Johnecia Kyles had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Logan's men played again Sunday against Kankakee and won 90-70 to improve to 12-1 and extend their win streak to seven. Kankakee is now 5-7.

Scrubb had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Harris (13), Quamain Nelson (11), Patterson (10) and Jordan Cousin (10) also reached double figures. Harris also had eight rebounds.

Sloan had nine points and seven assists and Jackson netted eight points. Campbell had six points and seven rebounds.

The Volunteers are now on Christmas break and won't meet again until Dec. 29 in preparation for the next game Jan. 4 against West Kentucky Tech from Paducah.
