Logan rallies for overtime win at Three Rivers

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. - The John A. Logan College men's basketball team overcame a seven-point deficit in regulation and hit clutch shots in overtime to beat Three Rivers, 98-93, on the road Tuesday night.

Jonah Jackson and Chris Harris both drilled huge 3-pointers in the extra session and David Sloan did the rest for the Vols, who also beat the Raiders 106-89 back on Nov. 6.

Logan is now 9-1 with five straight wins. The Vols were ranked 13th in the latest NJCAA Division I national Top 25 poll earlier in the day Tuesday.

Sloan had another monster game with 33 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds. Five of his points came in overtime. The sophomore All-American had 27 points on Saturday against Wabash Valley and put up 17 points with 13 assists in Sunday's win at Moberly.

"The last three games are what we've been expecting from him for over a year," Logan coach Kyle Smithpeters said on his postgame radio show. "We're finally getting to see it. He's putting the team on his back and everyone else is following along and growing along with him."

Smithpeters was given a technical foul in overtime when it looked like the Vols were headed to their second loss of the season. But the team kicked into high gear after that.

"The guys responded extremely well," Smithpeters said. "It was our fourth game in six days and I was worried about us coming out flat and we did. We were flat for 40 minutes, pretty much. But the guys had resilience down the stretch."

Jayden Scrubb added 18 points, Jackson finished with 15 and Harris had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Marion's Justin Saddoris chipped in two points and a rebound off the bench.

Tristan Jarrett scored 44 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Tallon Fonda had 22 points for Three Rivers, which dropped to 6-7.

"This is one of the hardest places in the country to play," Smithpeters said. "We showed the ability to be a championship team. We kept our composure in a tough environment and somehow managed to get a win."

In the women's game, Three Rivers rolled to an 87-57 win to drop the Lady Vols' record to 5-5. The Lady Raiders led 33-16 at the half. Kalveona Pepper led Logan with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Logan sends both teams to Harrisburg on Saturday to face Southeastern Illinois College starting at 1 p.m.
