Pinckneyville spikers share conference title; Du Quoin falls to Nashville

PINCKNEYVILLE - The Pinckneyville High School volleyball team clinched a share of the SIRR Mississippi Division championship Thursday with a 25-17, 25-21 win over Carterville on Senior Night.

The Lady Panthers improved to 22-7 overall and finished at 9-1 in the conference with the victory.

Lexie Hirsch had seven kills, with Kassidy Lee and Lily Tanner adding four each, while Elaine Shaneyfelt had 11 assists. Lynlee Lindner had eight digs, Tanner added five and Macy Epplin had four.

It was the final regular home match for seniors Hallie Waggoner, Taylor Witges, Hirsch and Lindner.

"I'm just really proud of the girls," said Pinckneyville coach Cathy Kohnen. "I've been here for five years now so I've had all of these girls since day one and they're kind of like my kids."

Pinckneyville was rooting hard for rival Du Quoin at the same time Thursday.

Du Quoin was hosting Nashville and if the Lady Indians won, the conference title would've been Pinckneyville's outright.

But the Hornettes rallied for a 15-25, 25-20, 25-22 win to claim their share with the Lady Panthers.

Nashville's records moved to 23-6 and 9-1 with the win, while Du Quoin dropped to 22-11 and 5-5.

Bailey Melton had 12 kills and Delaney Varel had 10, while Sydney Schnitker had 25 digs and Hazel Konkel put down seven blocks for Nashville in the win.

Du Quoin's Elizabeth Bird had 12 kills and seven blocks. Katie Smith had 14 digs and Meryn Gross had 21 assists.

Du Quoin finishes the regular season Wednesday night at home against Herrin.
