Lady Panthers win sectional title, advance to state

CENTRALIA - The Pinckneyville High School girls golf team won a sectional title for the first time in school history Monday and is now headed to the IHSA's Class 1A Girls State Golf Tournament.

The Lady Panthers totaled 335 at the Centralia Sectional held at Greenview Golf Club and beat out Massac County by two strokes for the team plaque.

Alton Marquette placed third at 339 by virtue of a tiebreaker over Columbia for the third team spot.

Megan Breslin led the Lady Panthers with a 78, with was the second-best individual score of the day behind only medalist Kylee Vaughan, a sophomore from Hamilton County, who shot a 3-over 73.

Graci McDaniel was next for Pinckneyville with an 80, followed by Sarah Breslin at 82 and Kally Mayo at 95. Also playing were Breyona Schandl (113) and Zoey Brammeier (129).

That was enough to win the title as Massac was led by Madie Coakley (80) and Millie Lawson (83) and then had three players shoot 87.

The 1A state tournament will be held at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur and begins Friday.

Also at the sectional, Carterville placed 11th of 12 teams and none of Herrin's individual qualifiers advanced. Murphysboro's Hannah Gahagan advanced as an individual at 79.
