Eldorado runs wild on V-G

Eldorado has never been short handed when it comes to stud running backs.

Over the years, fans have grown fond of such players as Tyler Deaton, Payton Price, Trey Vessel and Jacob Traxler.

Now you can feel free to add Dawson Metten to the mix.

Metten rushed for four touchdowns and had 118 yards on 16 carries in the Eagles' 38-20 Black Diamond Conference win over Vienna-Goreville Friday night at Boz Adams Field.

The win keeps Eldorado unbeaten in BDC play at 2-0, while Vienna-Goreville falls to 1-1.

Metten found the end zone early, scoring from two yards and one-yard out as Eldorado built a 16-0 lead and added a Metten touchdown from five yards out in the second to take a 24-6 halftime lead.

A Vienna-Goreville team that is known to be able to put some points on the board, finished with 288 yards of offense, but EHS head coach Joe Clark said establishing a lead early was the receipt for success.

"Anytime you feel like you're the favorite in the game, it helps to have success early," Clark said. "I feel like it gives our guys a psychological edge and we played a pretty clean offensive game. Defensively, Vienna-Goreville had some success, but even though we lost some battles, I feel like we won the war and we were in good shape when it was all said and done."

Jace Jenkins broke free on a big 55-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give Eldorado a 32-12 cushion and Metten finished things out with a six-yard run in the fourth.

Clark calls Metten a key piece to the puzzle that has established himself in the Eagle program.

"Dawson wasn't a guy on the map as a sophomore. He really developed himself that year and was important last year as a junior. Now, he's our key piece to the puzzle. He runs hard, he runs reckless and he's very talented. I'm just proud of him for the way he has improved and continues to get better. He is the go-to-guy in fullback position, so that's nice."

Eldorado ran 42 plays on the night, racking up 312 yards, all coming from the ground game.

Metten, who finished with 118 yards and had his longest run of 17 yards, was helped out in the backfield by Jenkins who had eight carries for 92 yards. Clayton Dennis had 78 yards on seven carries, while Aiden Whitlock had one carry for 12 yards. Blakely Watt and Jacob Etienne each had one carry for five yards. Joe Mayberry had two yards on one carry.
