MARION -- The Marion High School cross country teams opened their season by hosting the Marion Fast Start Invitational meet Thursday at the Crisp Sports Complex.

Centralia won the boys race with five runners in the top 10, while Carbondale had the first two finishers and placed second.

Marion was third led by junior John Bruce, who placed sixth and Matthew Crabtree in ninth.

Also competing in the boys race in order of finish were Mt. Vernon, Carterville, Vienna, Massac County, Salem, Murphysboro, Cobden and Harrisburg.

In the girls race, Carbondale had the first and third finishers and two more in the top 10 to win as a team, while Marion came in second with six runners placing between spots 6 and 14.

The Lady Wildcats were led by freshman Margaux Bruce, sisters Marissa and Lexi Basi, Mari Ray, Makenzie Miller and Ana Cuartas.

Other teams in order of finish were Carterville, Salem, Vienna, Murphysboro and Harrisburg.

Marion runs again Wednesday at the Murphysboro Invitational.
