OLNEY -- David Sloan and Romelo Burrell both came up big in the second half to help the John A. Logan College men's basketball team stave off Olney Central College, 91-85, Wednesday night in a tight Great Rivers Athletic Conference game.

Logan is now 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the GRAC, while OCC dropped to 10-4 and 3-3.

Sloane scored 23 points and Burrell had 21 for the Vols, who are 17th in the current NJCAA Division I national rankings. Vonnie Paterson had 12 of his 19 in the first half and Jaiveon Eaves also hit double figures with 12.

The game was tied at 19 in the first half, but the Vols took off and built a cushion with a 10-point flurry. They led 40-34 after a 3-pointer from Jonah Jackson then 46-34 after a jumper from Eaves. Logan's lead at the half was 47-36.

A layup by Sloan pushed the lead to 59-44 at the 13:51 mark of the second half and it was 67-53 after Derek Hawthorne Jr. split a pair of free throws and Burrell rebounded and putback the miss.

Sloan drilled a 3-pointer for a 70-60 lead at the nine-minute mark and a putback from Patterson kept it double digits at 76-66. The Knights crept to within six points with under four minutes left, but Sloan banked in another trey and hit another to push it back to 11 moments later.

Olney again pulled within six at 88-82 with 43 seconds left, but a perfectly-executed bomb pass inbounds play led to Burrell all alone for a two-handed slam that sealed it.

Hawthorne finished with seven points and Jackson had five. Quamaine Nelson and Damion Taylor both chipped in two points for the Vols.

Olney's Josiah Wallace led all scorers with 29 points. The 6-foot-3 guard from Marshall, Illinois, had 12 of those points in the first few minutes and had 17 at the half.

Logan's next scheduled game is Saturday in Mattoon against Lake Land.
