EHT: Eagles Go Back-To-Back

In 1987 a gallon of gas costs you 87 cents, Talking Alf was the hot Christmas toy and George Michael's "Faith" closed out the calendar year as the No. 1 hit.

It was also the same year Eldorado and Harrisburg met in the finals of the Eldorado Holiday Tournament and in fitting fashion, the Eagles closed out the year No. 1 - as top seeded Eldorado - rallied to beat rival Harrisburg 56-49 in the championship game of the EHT.

Eldorado had to have a little faith, having a one-point lead only twice in the first quarter and didn't lead again until the end of the third quarter when they led 36-35.

Harrisburg, who led by as many as five at 32-27 in the third quarter after an Isaiah Saulsberry bucket, found finding the bottom of the rim from the field difficult as the Bulldogs closed out the second half with just four field goals, including one in the fourth quarter.

Harrisburg got to within one three times, thanks in part to some clutch free throw shooting from Jordan Bartok and Dalton Lambert, but a Harrisburg turnover with 52.7 seconds to play and an ensuing foul sent Eldorado's John Meredith to the free throw line, where the senior knocked down a pair to give EHS a 52-47 lead and ultimately sealed the deal.

Meredith finished with a team-high 18 points and took home Most Valuable Player honors, while Jacob Traxler had 14 points, two of which came on a bucket with 1:08 to play after Lambert's two free throws cut the Eldorado lead to 48-47 and Traxler responded with a 15-footer before the Harrisburg turnover. Braden Attebury had 12 points in the win.

Kale Oglesby netted nine for the Eagles in the win, while Ray May tacked on three.

Saulsberry, who was named to the EHT All-Tournament Team for the second straight season, led all scorers with 22 points and was responsible for 10 points in the first quarter as Harrisburg took a 23-17 lead and went into the locker room up 23-25 as Eldorado closed the gap, going on a 6-0 run and all points coming from Kale Oglesby, who was named the Duff-Kingston Sportsmanship Award winner.

The first half featured eight lead changes and five ties as Eldorado and Harrisburg played back-and-forth basketball. The game ended with nine lead changes as Traxler gave Eldorado the lead for good with 38 seconds to play in the third quarter.

The Eagles have now won eight EHT titles and have also won three straight over Harrisburg in recent matches. Meanwhile, Harrisburg played in its 17th championship game and has been in the finals eight of the last nine years.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: The All-Tournament Team from the 53rd Eldorado Holiday Tournament included Cade Schnicker (Edwards County), Drew Ringle (Herrin), Travis Black (Carmi-White County), Isaiah Thompson (Massac County), C.J. Johnson (West Frankfort), Jake Parr (Anna-Jonesboro), Keagan Thrash (West Frankfort), Jordan Bartok (Harrisburg), Jacob Traxler (Eldorado), Isaiah Saulsberry (Harrisburg), Kale Oglesby (Eldorado, Duff-Kingston), John Meredith (Eldorado, MVP).
