CHS golfers honored at banquet

Chester High School honored its Yellow Jackets and Lady Yellow Jackets golf teams on Nov. 14 at a banquet and awards ceremony held at the Chester Eagles Club.

"We really had a good year," said Chester assistant coach Paul Zemlyn. "These girls were hard workers and came out every day ready to play.

"We had some young athletes that progressed throughout the year, and if they play throughout the summer, they will be even better next fall."

The Lady Yellow Jacket squad featured seniors Hanna Bert and Alyse Vasquez; sophomores Alyssa Place, Mallary Vasquez and Autumn Dunn and freshman Samantha Eggemeyer.

Vasquez led Chester most of the season followed by either Place or Bert.

The Lowest Average Award was earned by Vasquez, while the Most Improved Award was earned by Place.

"The girls were great to have this year," Zemlyn said. "They listened, tried their best, worked hard, and improved throughout the season.

"They played and worked as a team. I look forward to seeing them all out again next fall."

Head coach Chris Toledo spoke about the boys team. Chester's roster included seniors Clay Herrell and Lake Fogerson; juniors Jakob Cushman and Jacob Wingerter and five sophomores (Ronin Doiron, Ian Reith, Chett Andrews, Wes Carpenter and Michael Wingerter) and four freshmen (Jarrett James, Jaden Mott, Jordan Hughes and Ryan Whitley).

"We return our top six golfers next year," Toledo said. "I look forward to 2018. If these boys get out on the golf course next summer and work on their games, we could be really good."

Chester's top three golfers were James, Wingerter and Mott.

James won the Lowest Average Award, after earning medalist honors eight times last season and finishing with an average of 39.8 strokes for nine holes. He was also recently selected to the All-South team.

"Jarrett was an all-around great kid," Toledo said. "At matches this year, other coaches would frequently come up to me and say that this kid can really play.

"He wanted to make the state tournament but just missed. His goal is to make it to state next fall."

Wingerter averaged 47.2 strokes per nine holes for Chester. The Most Improved award went to Andrews.
