Prep Girls Hoops: Harrisburg rolls past Mt. Vernon in season opener

The Harrisburg High School girls' basketball team got off on the right foot, opening the season with a resounding 74-31 win over visiting Mt. Vernon last Thursday at Davenport Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs put four players in double figures as Lotte Miller led the charge with 16 points. Jessica Hopson tacked on 13 points in the win, while Matty Hawkins netted 11 and Karsyn Davis tacked on 10 in the win.

Madeline Rider added eight points off the bench, while Brooke Meylor finished with five. Lydia Miller finished with four points, while Mya King tacked on three and Lauren McDaniel scored two points.

Harrisburg shot 50 percent from the field, going 74-for-27, while knocking down 20 3-point shots, going 20-for-35 for 57 percent.

The Harrisburg junior varsity team also opened the season with a 44-39 win over the Rams.

Ivy Brown led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Essence Sanders finished in double figures with 14 points.

Lydia Miller netted eight and Lauren McDaniel chipped in with six. Gabby Adams and Alli Ferrell each had a free throw in the win.

The Eldorado High School girls' basketball team dropped a 52-48 loss at Goreville last Thursday to start the 2017-18 campaign.

Takiya Britton had a team-high 17 points for the Eagles, while Paige Munds also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Lexie Mitchell added eight points off the bench, while Rachel Stafford scored six points. Zakiya Britton finished with four and Madison Newton tacked on two points in the loss.

Gallatin County senior guard Hailey Chubb led all scorers with 32 points, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks dropped a 66-50 game to Massac County to wrap up play at the Heartland Regional Lady Cat Tip Off Classic last week.

Audrey Jackson also finished in double figures for Gallatin County with 11 points, while Gracie Sauls tossed in three points. Amy Borland and Emma Brockett both scored two points in the loss.
