Alumni Corner: Buss' dramatics help IU

<b>Tyler Smithpeters - SIU <b/>

Smithpeters got his first start of the season, playing 33 minutes and scoring eight points, including some free throws late to help SIU stave up an upset by Illinois-Springfield Saturday at the SIU Arena.

The Harrisburg native was 2-of-4 from the field and 1-of-3 from beyond the arc, including a 3-of-4 mark from the free throw line in helping SIU to a 2-0 start. Smithpeters finished with four rebounds (three defensive) and added one block and one steal.

<b>Bahari Amaya - Illinois-Springfield<b/>

Amaya went 1-of-4 from the field, scoring two points in the Stars' 69-64 loss at SIU Saturday.

Amaya played just seven minutes, while going 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, grabbing one rebound (defensive).

On Friday night, UIS knocked off Robert Morris 100-80, where the Harrisburg standout chipped in with two points on 1-of-2 shooting. Amaya grabbed four rebounds (all defensive) in the win, logging seven minutes.

<b>Justin Carpenter - SEMO<b/>

Carpenter logged 14 minutes and went 1-of-4 from the field, scoring two points in SEMO's 66-50 loss at Evansville Thursday night. The Mt. Carmel native was 0-for-1 from 3-point range and grabbed one rebound (defensive) and had three turnovers with one block.

Carpenter was one of five Redhawks to score in double figures as he poured in 17 in a 96-95 loss to Louisiana Tech earlier in the week. Carpenter was 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from the foul stripe. He finished with six rebounds (four defensive) and had one block.

<b>Austin Wills - Trevecca Nazarene<b/>

Wills got the start for the Trojans in a 88-70 loss to Alabama-Huntsville last Thursday.

The Benton product played 28 minutes and went 1-of-9 from the field and 1-of-8 from beyond the arc to score three points and finishing with one steal.

On Saturday, Trevecca lost to Christian Brothers 77-74, where Wills played 19 minutes coming off the bench and went 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-points for 13 points.

<b>Tyra Buss - Indiana<b/>

Buss led all scorers with a game-high 23 points in the Hoosiers' 66-49 win over Southern late last week. Buss made her 100th career start in 100 career games played at IU and following her 23-point outburst, Buss has now scored 1,674 points in her IU career as she sits seventh all-time and is 117 points shy of fifth place (Cyndi Valentin, 1,769). She also took over sole possession of second place all-time in assists with her five dimes and currently has 416 in her career.

On Friday, Buss's layup with three seconds left help give Indiana a 73-71 win over Western Kentucky at home on Friday night. Buss led IU with 22 points. It was her third 20 point game this year. Buss delivered in the clutch for the Hoosiers, scoring a tying 3-pointer with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter and Indiana's game-winning layup with three seconds remaining.
