JUCO Hoops: Falcons struggle to score in loss to Shawnee

It was a cold shooting night from the field for head coach Mark Motsinger and the SIC Falcons in a 91-52 setback to Shawnee Wednesday night at Deaton Gym. The Falcons (1-4, 0-1 GRAC) managed to muster just a pair of field goals in the first half in a contest that saw a combined 64 team fouls, including five technicals.

Freshman Mathew Norl had 12 points to lead the Falcons while Carbondale product Winslow Martin scored nine points before fouling out.

"We played like a bunch of freshmen, and that's basically what we are, without a real leading scorer," said Motsinger. "We've got a lot of role players, but we just don't have that one player that can step in and lead us and score. Winslow (Martin) can do it every so often, but he got in foul trouble quick and was kind of taken out of the game pretty quick."

Six-foot-seven freshman Michael McCormick added eight points and 6-7 freshman Trey Gadsen dropped in seven for the Falcons.

It took Southeastern nearly five minutes before registering their first field goal of the night after falling behind 6-0 out of the gate.

"We just couldn't quite pull it together tonight," said Motsinger. "We just kind of fell apart offensively, especially when Winslow (Martin) got in trouble. He had 32 the other night. I was pretty happy with the play of a couple of the big kids. Trey Gadsen has kind of struggled all year, but he came in tonight and did a good job going to the boards, and Michael McCormick I thought played his butt off getting on the boards and playing defense against their big guy."

Shawnee led 41-18 at intermission and had 12 different players find the scoring column.

The Saints drained nine triples in the contest, including four from Paducah, Ky. native Sayveon McEwen who had a game-high 26 points.

Harrisburg native Anfernee Houston scored three points for SIC, Norris City-Omaha-Enfield's Matt Long added a field goal and Carbondale's Keandre Cobb also scored two points for the Falcons.

SIC is idle until Tuesday when it will have its road conference opener at Lincoln Trail.

"I knew (Shawnee) was going to come in here and scrap and fight," said SIC coach Steve Kenner. "But we were able to do some good things off of it. I think we shared the ball a lot. I'm sure we had a lot of assists because I keep stressing to them if we could just do the little things. If we can just do the little things and be disciplined, we're going to be pretty good."

SIC led 19-13 after the first quarter and pushed its lead to 40-30 at halftime before the Lady Saints made things interesting for a short time during the second half.
