Prep Volleyball: Harrisburg falls at Murphysboro in key SIRR Ohio contest

Harrisburg head volleyball coach Heather Cox knew confidence was going to be key in the Bulldogs' big battle with Murphysboro Tuesday night, where SIRR Ohio bragging rights for first place were on the line.

In the end, Murphysboro came out on top winning the first match 25-19 and the third match 25-9, while Harrisburg pulled out a 25-19 win in the second match.

"We came up on the short end of it (confidence)," Cox said. "Big players want to step up in big games and tonight we were missing that."

Matty Hawkins, who had seven kills, six stuff blocks and six digs, along with Devin Butler, who had two aces and 19 assists led most of the Bulldogs in statistical categories. Reagan Thompson also contributed with five kills and a block.

The loss puts Harrisburg at 18-7 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Also on Tuesday night, the Harrisburg junior varsity and freshman team lost in straight sets to the Red Devils.

Harrisburg returns home Thursday to play host to Herrin.
