Prep Football: Eagles punch playoff ticket with win over Edwards County

A lot of boxes were checked Saturday at Eldorado's Boz Adams Field.

The Air Evac Lifeteam presented the game ball for the EHS and Edwards County football game, three individuals and two baseball teams were inducted into the school's hall of fame at halftime and the Eagles officially became playoff eligible with a 36-7 win over their Black Diamond Conference foe.

Eldorado set the tone early, scoring on their first three possessions as Dawson Metten had a six-yard score in the first quarter, which followed a 45-run by Jacob Traxler to start the second quarter and Connor Watt capped off the first half with a one-yard scamper, giving the Eagles the 24-0 advantage at the half.

"Anytime we can control the line of scrimmage like we did both sides of the ball, we'll have success if we don't make bigger mistakes like turning the ball over or trying to do more than we're able to do," EHS (6-1) head coach Joe Clark said. "Today, we controlled the line of scrimmage and able to grind it out and come out with a victory on Homecoming."

Traxler added a 12-yard TD run in the third quarter, upping the ante to 30-0 as the SIU commit finished his day with 121 yards on 10 carries.

Eldorado's ground game was about as effective as it could have been against Edwards County (2-5), finishing with 325 yards on 44 carries.

After Traxler, Metten had 85 yards on 14 carries, while Jace Jenkins netted 50 yards on six touches. Blakely Watt, who added a fourth quarter score when he found paydirt from 31 yards out, had four carries for 35 yards. Connor Watt, who also punched in a pair of two-point conversions in the first half, 18 yards on three carries.

The contest was one that Clark said could have been a trap game for his team, who will host unbeaten Fairfield (7-0) Friday in a key BDC game.

"You focus on intrusive thoughts a little bit, but we have a pretty good senior group and I'm pretty honest with them. We talk about it and don't ignore it and hope that it fixes itself. The reality is, Edwards County is a good football team and we had to come out and play well. We did that and now we're excited and ready to move onto the next chapter."

The Lions' only score came off a Cade Schnicker QB keeper from a yard out with 6:29 to play in the fourth.

Lincoln Moore went for 44 yards on 10 carries to lead the way for Edwards County, who had 82 yards on the ground and another 47 in the air.

A win over Fairfield Friday, obviously gives the Mules their first loss of the season, but with an Eldorado Week 3 loss to Sesser-Valier-Waltonville-Woodlawn, the Eagles with need S-V-W-W to beat Fairfield Week 9 to cause a 3-way tie in BDC play.
