MARION -- The streak is alive.
Devyn Wright scored three runs and Mason Gooch had a pair of RBI doubles as the Marion Junior High School baseball team rallied for a 6-4 win over Harrisburg in the championship game of the SIJHSAA Class L Marion Regional on Friday at the Crisp Sports Complex.
MJHS now takes a 22-0 record into the Class L quarterfinals that take place next Saturday (Sept. 30) at Centralia's Rotary Park. The Wildcats face Mascoutah in the last of four games at approximately 1 p.m.
The rest of the quarterfinal bracket will be finalized Monday but one of Marion's conference mates, Carterville, has already punched a ticket to join them.
Marion and Harrisburg both scored single runs in the first inning Friday. Marion's run came after Wright singled and crossed on a groundout by Trace Bittle.
Both teams scored again in the third inning. Marion's Trevor Jackson singled and scored on a double by Gooch.
Then in the fifth, Harrisburg scored two runs on a strikeout to take the lead. A dropped third strike with two runners on base led to a throwing error that pushed both runners across.
In the bottom half, Marion tied it and took the lead.
Wright drew a walk and Gooch reached on an error, then after Bittle struck out, Chase Austin hit a scorcher to first base that resulted in an error and brought both runners home.
Karsten Stotlar, who started on the mound but was relieved by Gooch in the fifth, then drove in Austin for the go-ahead run.
Wright walked and scored on a double by Gooch in the sixth for an insurance tally. Gooch then pitched around a hit batsman in the seventh to seal the win.
