SAUGET -- The Gateway Grizzlies edged the Southern Illinois Miners, 5-4, in the rubber game of a three-game series Thursday night at GCS Ballpark.
In the bottom half of the first, three straight singles, a bases-loaded walk to Blake Brown and an RBI double by Terry McClure gave the Grizzlies an early 2-0 lead. Southern Illinois tied it in the second inning on an infield single by James Alfonso and a bases-loaded walk to Romeo Cortina.
Brown doubled in a run in the third and Alfonso doubled in a run for the Miners in the fourth, but Gateway took the lead for good with two-out hits by Jack Hranec and Evan Rogers in the fifth.
Ryan Lashley hit an RBI double for the Miners in the seventh, but was stranded on second. Lashley, Alfonso and Brett Wiley all had two hits in the loss.
On Wednesday, Gateway hit three consecutive homers in the fifth inning to hand the Miners an 8-7 loss and snap their three-game win streak. Lashley hit his team-leading 13th homer as part of a 3-for-4 night. Nolan Earley had two hits and Craig Massey had an RBI triple in the loss.
The Miners now host Evansville in a weekend series starting Friday.
