College Hoops: Henshaw leads Flyers with 3.76 GPA

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced on Tuesday (July 18) that the Lewis University men's basketball team had six players named to the NABC Honors Court, earning the Flyers the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award.

Lewis is one of five Great Lakes Valley Conference squads to earn the Team Academic Excellence Award and has been recognized in each of the five years that this award has existed.

In order to earn a NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, institutions in NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA Division I and II, must count the grade point averages of all men's student-athletes who competed during the 2016-17 season. The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for the 2016-17 season. Lewis checked in with a 3.29 cumulative GPA.

"This group of young men did a fantastic job of focusing on their academics last year because they were committed to being successful on and off the court," Lewis head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. I would like to thank Courtney Schmitz, our Athletic Academic Specialist, for her dedication to our young men in our program."

Helping the Flyers attain that goal were five NABC Honors Court performers in Capel Henshaw , Phil Leibham, Eddie Miles (/Hales Franciscan), Nick Norton (Downers Grove North), Miles Simelton (/Oswego) and Jens Soderholm (LaSalle Peru).

Henshaw, who majored in sports management, led the Flyers with a 3.76 GPA.

In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. The qualifications are as follows:

1. Academically a junior or senior and a varsity player.

2. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year.

3. Students must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution.

4. Member of an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.
