Softball: Galatia-Thompsonville wins GEC; Harrisburg struggles on road

The Galatia-Thompsonville softball team pounded Pope County 17-2 Tuesday, claiming the Greater Egyptian Conference championship for the fifth time in the last seven years. The Bearcats have seven GEC titles in the last 13 years.<br />Dani Reynolds got the win Tuesday, tossing a one-hitter over two innings, striking out one.<br />At the plate, Brittany Hutchison, Maddy Murphy, Kennedy Harris, Leah Davis and Katie Linsley all had multiple hit. Murphy hit her first career home run and had a team-high five RBI on the day. Linsley finished with three RBI, while Hutchison and Davis both drove in two runs. Harris had an RBI, as did Mackenzie Nolan, who went 1-for-2 on the day.<br />Galatia-Thompsonville is now 12-4 on the season and finished GEC play at 8-0. The Bearcats will be in the Carrier Mills-Stonefort Class 1A Regional next week, playing No. 6 seed Gallatin County on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

<strong>Harrisburg falls twice on road, loses at home to Mt. Vernon</strong><br />The Harrisburg High School softball has not had a good start to the week, dropping a pair of games. On Monday, Harrisburg lost 6-4 at Anna-Jonesboro and then fell 2-1 at Hardin County Tuesday night.<br />In Elizabethtown, Lydia Miller took the loss as she dropped to 3-5 on the year in the circle. Miller went 6 2/3, giving up two runs on eight hits, while striking out six and walking six.<br />The Bulldogs had just four hits in the loss to the Cougars as Karsyn Davis paced HHS at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, scoring Madeline Rider in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-all. McKenzie Sullivan and Gillian Jones had the other two hits.<br />Hardin County pulled out the win with a two out walkoff in the seventh to steal the game.<br />On Monday, Harrisburg's luck wasn't much better as Anna-Jonesboro scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 6-4.<br />Alli Ferrell took the loss, going three innings and allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out two and walking one.<br />Essence Sanders went 3-for-4 at the plate for Harrisburg, while Lexi Williams, Hanna Reid, Sullivan and Rider all had one hit. Sullivan and Rider each had an RBI in the loss.<br />Harrisbrug's game with Carbondale Wednesday was cancelled and the Bulldogs will close out the week Saturday hosting both Du Quoin and Fairfield in a double header, starting at 11 a.m.<br /><br />
