CHAMPAIGN — Marion High School junior Michael Cantrell suffered a tough opening-round loss Thursday at the IHSA's Individual State Wrestling Championships.

Cantrell, competing in the Class 2A's 195-pound bracket, went up against Oak Forest senior Eric Brenner and lost a 7-2 decision at the State Farm Center.

Brenner is now 37-7 and wrestles in the quarterfinals Friday, with his result determining whether or not Cantrell, who is now 31-11, will get to wrestle again.

"I started off good and I had a lot of movement," Cantrell said. "I shot an outside single and took him down, he got a stand up to make it 2-1 and then he chose down and got away."

That escape tied it at 2-2 and a reversal made it 4-2 going into the third period.

"I tried another shot and he got a go-behind," Cantrell said. "Then I tried a roll and tried to grab the ankle but he held me and got back points."

Brenner's next opponent is Burlington Central senior Erik Hansen, who improved to 29-11 with a 6-3 win over Elmwood Park senior Justin Chakchay (29-6).

If Brenner wins, Cantrell gets into the consolation bracket. If Brenner loses, Brenner takes that spot.

"He should win his next match so hopefully I can come back in and win some matches," Cantrell said.

The tournament continues through Saturday night's finals.
