Prep Wrestling: A Strong Showing

Harrisburg’s Kyle Cavender and Chase McDaniel each had a second place showing for the Bulldogs at this past weekend’s Murdale Tournament.

Harrisburg finished eighth in the tournament with 101 points, while Belleville Althoff took the event with 183 points. Glenwood was second with 180 and Cahokia was third with 163 points. Oxley-Richland County was fourth with 134 and Carbondale rounded out the top five with 132.

Harrisburg dropped the Mt. Olive Tournament to go back to Murdale this season, a tournament Harrisburg head coach Greg Langley said his team hasn’t been at in some time, but felt with it being 24 teams in total and a good number of them being 2A teams, it would give his Bulldogs a chance to wrestling good competition and since Murdale does pool play the first day, it gave the longtime coach a chance to get his wrestlers in more matches.

“Overall, I feel that this weekend was pretty successful for us,” Langley said. We were able to finish in eighth out of 24 teams, which is pretty good. Our kids did a good job, we had some matches that we could have wrestled better, but overall, I feel we can say this weekend we took steps forward to get better. I feel that this weekend gave us a chance to continue to improve on our feet with our offense. The kids have a pretty good idea now of what we have to do better to compete at the next level.”

Kyle Cavender (19-2) at 126 pounds, lost by fall to Belleville Althoff’s Chase Bittle in the championship match and took second.

At 285 pounds, McDaniel (18-3) lost to Glenwood’s Will Putnam by an 8-4 decision in their first place match.
