Prep Hoops: Hawks rally for win

Gallatin County senior Seth Ramsey accounted for all 17 of his club’s points in the fourth quarter to finish with 29 on the night as the Hawks came from behind to take down Wayne City, 48-44, Tuesday evening.

Ramsey, who connected on 19-of-20 charity tosses, helped his club turn a 34-31 deficit entering the final quarter into win No. 11 for Gallatin County which also kept the Hawks unbeaten at home.

“He (Ramsey) shot free throws like he is supposed to shoot free throws,” Gallatin County coach Doug Miller said of his team’s leading scorer. “And if he does that, we’ll go far this year. When he does that, I look like a better coach than I do sometimes when he misses them.”

Wayne City had the ball and trailed by two possessions in the final 20 seconds, but didn’t get off a shot attempt until less than five seconds remained in the game.

The Indians only converted on five field goals the entire second half and didn’t have their first fourth quarter basket until the 1:36 mark of the final stanza.

Senior forward Chad Dickey scored 12 first half points to help the Indians lead 26-20 at the break. Dickey, who is listed at 6-foot-5, finished with 17 points for the Indians (12-2).

“In the first half, we could not defend their back-pick cut. They back cut us to death,” said Miller. “We went over that 112 times at halftime and we defended it great in the second half. I’m proud of my guys for making the adjustment.”

Audie Goebel dropped in seven points for the Hawks (11-5). Aaron Walters hit two 3-pointers to finish with six points, Luis Rubio added four and Robbie Prince scored two.

In addition to being perfect at home, Gallatin County is also still unbeaten this season against fellow 1A competition.

Wayne City’s only loss before Tuesday had come earlier in the season to Patoka.

Gallatin County will host Elverado Saturday afternoon with the junior varsity contest beginning at 1 p.m. That will be followed by a girls’ varsity game that will lead into a boys’ varsity contest.
