Prep Girls Hoops: Harrisburg, Gallatin Co. pick up wins

After suffering their first setback of the season earlier in the week at West Frankfort and surrendering over 80 points in the process, the Harrisburg Lady Bulldogs were able to get back in the win column with a strong defensive showing in a 43-25 win over Du Quoin Thursday night at Davenport Gym.

Offense was at a premium in the first half when HHS (6-1) jumped out to a 12-2 lead after the first quarter.

"I thought our defense was really good tonight," said Harrisburg coach Jake Stewart. "Anytime you hold a team to 25 points in a game, especially a good team like Du Quoin, you have to be happy about the outcome."

Du Quoin (2-4) didn't have much more success getting baskets to fall in the second period and trailed 22-4 at the break.

The Lady Bulldogs used a size advantage inside all evening, and 6-foot-2 junior Matty Hawkins scored 16 points to lead her club.

"If you can guard people and defend, you can win almost every night," said Stewart. "You can win on good shooting nights and you can win on tough shooting nights. If our shots aren't falling outside like they weren't tonight, we have got to go inside to Matty (Hawkins), and I thought we did a really good job of working her early and often."

Lotte Miller dropped in eight points for Harrisburg. Karsyn Davis and Jessica Hopson each had seven. Senior Toni Crisp added four points, and Madeline Rider had a free throw.

Senior Tarynn Mays paced Du Quoin with nine points.

Harrisburg returns to action Saturday evening when it hosts Union County, Ky.
