Prep Golf: Putting on the dancing shoes

Garrett Jenkins will have to find a pair of dancing shoes.

The Harrisburg High School senior fired an 83 Tuesday at the IHSA Class 2A Sectional, securing himself a spot at the upcoming state tournament.

Playing at Mattoon Golf and Country Club, navigating the course was as important as playing golf.

The tree-lined track made conditions tough on the 112 golfers Tuesday as wind and undulated greens were a factor.

As it stood, Jenkins finished eighth as an individual, shooting a 41-42 and will now advance to this weekend's IHSA State Tournament in Bloomington-Normal.

"The key to Garrett's game today was his course management," HHS head coach Steve Black said. "He kept it and play and that was important because it was a difficult golf course to manage and putting was a big problem for just about everyone today. It was windy and that influenced a lot of shots, but all-in-all, he kept it in play and while he didn't hit it his best, he didn't play bad."

Fellow teammate and Bulldog Camden Schiff concluded his year at Harrisburg with a 95, firing a 50 on the front and following it up with a 45 on the back.
