Prep Football: Blacked Out

The storylines were a plenty Saturday for the Eldorado High School football team.

Life Flight helicopter service from Ferrell Hospital landed at midfield to present the game ball as Eldorado and Hamilton County squared off on the Eagles' homecoming at Boz Adams Field.

The Eagles were all-black uniforms, in an effort to help raise money through the Coach Jerry Kill fund and cancer research.

Eldorado's scoreboard didn't work, a game official went down to start the game and it was hot.

Aside from the abnormal September temperatures, the Eldorado defense was just as warm.

The Eagles pitched a 40-0 shutout over Hamilton County, their fourth out of five games this season and forced the Foxes into four fumbles and an interception and scored a touchdown for the second straight week in the win.

Eldorado (4-1) held Hamilton County (1-4) to 22 yards on 22 carries as the Foxes finished with 29 yards of total offense.

Eagles head coach Brandon Hampton called Saturday's victory a "program win."

"I was really proud of our kids for the preparation this week," Hampton said. This is a hard week to be a head football coach, there are a lot of distractions, but we have a veteran football team and they practiced well all week and today, they came out from the opening kickoff and handled their business."

Eldorado senior Payton Price, who had six touches for 158 yards, also scored four touchdowns on the day, finding the end zone from 20 yards out to put Eldorado up 6-0 at the 8:28 mark in the first quarter and then punched in scores from 54, 23 and 47 yards out on the day.

One of Eldorado's other scores came following Price's punch in when Tyler Gass had a scoop-and-score and Kale Oglesby hooked up with Jacob Traxler on a fly route from 28 yards out for the other score, building a 40-0 lead after halftime and playing the second half with a running clock.

"I was really excited about how our offensive line played," Hampton added. "There were several times when Trey Vessel and Payton Price break long runs and are untouched and that's just a great credit to our offensive line being so physical, but on defense, we also had a big time play by Tyler Gass for the scoop-and-score. I thought Ross Harris did a great job leading the football team and Jacob Traxler had a great game.

"We are a good football team. Do we have a ways to go? Sure. We need to execute more consistently at a higher level, but we take care of business against bad football teams right now and we continue to get better as the season goes on. Now, as we are heading down the stretch, we are in a position where we can continue to improve because we have some big ballgames coming up. The challenge for us is to not look ahead and right now our focus is on Edwards County."

Eldorado will hit the road Friday for it's first trip to the newest member of the Black Diamond Conference, Edwards County (1-4) for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
