Prep Hoops: Galatia, Gallatin Co. pick up wins at GEC Tourney

A pair of Kody Matthews free throws with three seconds to play was all the insurance Galatia needed in the first round of the Greater Egyptian Conference Tournament, as the Bearcats held on for a 54-48 win over Hardin County Tuesday at Southeastern Illinois College.

The Bearcats were led by Luke Lawrence's 16 points, while Devyn Verbeck tacked on 10 for Galatia in the win as they move on to play Gallatin County Friday night at 7 p.m.

Gallatin County had to have a little extra time before the eventually put away Thompsonville 49-44 in overtime in the first game Tuesday night at the GEC Tournament.

For the Bearcats, they used a 20-11 second quarter to take a 29-20 lead into the locker room.

Sean Mondino netted nine for Galatia, while Austin Stricklin added eight and Matthews chipped in with seven. Austin Stevens finished with four.

In the opener Tuesday, more drama ensued with Gallatin County trailing by one and with 4.5 seconds to play, Seth Ramsey was fouled where he made 1-of-2 free throws in regulation, sending the game into OT, where Gallatin County won 49-44.

Ramsey had a game-high 29 points for the Hawks in the win,e while Robbie Prince poured in 15 to finish in double figures as well.

Audie Goebel tacked on three and Logan Lane finished with two.
