Five questions with ... Daniel Scheffer of Harrisburg

Q. How productive do you think a face-to-face meeting will be between President Trump and Kim Jong Un?

I believe it's going to be very nonproductive but is very important.

Q. What is your take on ABC's decision to cancel "Roseanne" over remarks the actress made?

I don't agree with it for the fact of other shows doing the same thing on the network. She said something about taking medication, and that medication can make you talk crazy. She may be racist too, but why would her crew go with her to FOX if they hate her? It's all politically tied.

Q. How would you try to fix SIU's declining enrollment?

I went to school there and there was 25,000 students, now there is roughly 13,000. I think they need to focus more on undergraduate programs, they lost focus on them while being so concerned with the advanced degrees and studies. Once they did that, it went downhill fast.

Q. Have you lost confidence in SIU's leadership?

I like the new chancellor, but I think it's a little too late. He's trying to shut programs down and they aren't letting him. They are wanting wage increases, which is fine, but they can't support themselves. There is going to have to be a bunch of other changes.

Q. Do Americans have less interest in attending Memorial Day or Veterans Day events?

I don't believe they do, I see just as many people out. Coming from a military household, I think more people support it than ever. I think maybe gas prices keep a lot of people in, not just from Memorial or Veterans Day, but traveling in general.
