Wanda G. Mitchell of Marion

Wanda G. Mitchell died Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 10 a.m., at Integrity Healthcare, Marion, Illinois at the age of 91.

Wanda was born on August 25, 1928 in Marion, Illinois, the daughter of Amos O. and Mayme (Watkins) Strobel. She was united in marriage to Henry Mitchell on June 27, 1948 and they had three children together.

Wanda earned a Bachelors in Education and a Masters in Education from Southern Illinois University. She was a graduate assistant in the Child Guidance Clinic. Her teaching career started in Tucson, Arizona in 1952. She also taught school in Chula Vista, California, and in Champaign, Illinois. While her husband, Henry, was in business, Wanda worked in his office as a bookkeeper and secretary.

Wanda was a member of the Third Baptist Church in Marion, and formerly was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Marion and Kissimmee First Baptist Church when in Florida. Wanda played the organ at several area Baptist churches through the years. She enjoyed swimming, reading, cooking, fishing with her husband, playing the organ and being together with her family.

Surviving Wanda are her children and their spouses; Teddi and Doug Grindberg of St. Paul, Minnesota, Steve H. and Patty Mitchell of Marion, Illinois, Stasia and Tony Shoemaker of Vienna, Illinois; her grandchildren, Nathan Reeder, Graham and Brenda Reeder, Harry and Kezia Reeder, Michal and Scott MacDonald, Joshua and Christina Mitchell; great grandchildren, Annamarie Allard, Kaden and William Reeder, Charlotte Reeder, Malachi, Adelaide and Isaiah MacDonald.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters; Virginia Stewart, Ruth Cox, Evelyn Moore, Ann Strobel, and one brother, Amos Strobel.

Due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 virus and by the signing of the executive order by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a private funeral service and visitation will be held at Blue Funeral Home in Marion. Burial will follow at Rose Hill in Marion.
