James D. Spangler of Du Quoin

James D. Spangler, 85, of Du Quoin, passed away at 9:56 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020 at the Pinckneyville Nursing and Rehab Center.

James worked as a cement mixer at Firestone Company. He was of the Christian faith. James was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Du Quoin American Legion.

James also was a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, V.F.W., and Kiwanis Club, all in Salinas, California. James was loved by his in-laws and was a dear brother to all. He raised his great-granddaughter, Aliyah, "My Angel," who considered him a father figure.

He was born April 18, 1934 at Du Quoin, the son of James H. and Fern L. (McClanahan) Spangler.

He married Lydie Rolande Marcelline Pompey on April 26, 1958 at Dieulouard, France and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin; three children, Minette Blair of Du Quoin, Tita (Bob) Bailey of Sacramento, California and Nathalie Dawson of Sharpsville, Indiana; two sisters, Wanda Huite of Du Quoin and Peggy Holmes of Benton; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with James Clardy and Fr. Joseph Oganda officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard in Sunset Memorial Park at Du Quoin.

Friends are invited to make memorials to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. They will be accepted at the funeral home.
