George Frederick Henley, age 87, of Harrisburg, passed away at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019 at his residence.
George was born on July 12, 1932, in Harrisburg, to the late Frederick and Halleen (Ferguson) Henley. On Sept. 12, 1964 he married Lynda Nolen and she survives in Harrisburg.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg.
George served in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War veteran. He began his law enforcement career as a Harrisburg city police officer, and he then worked as Chief of Security for the A.L. Bowen Center for 13 years.
He was elected and reelected Saline County Sheriff over 20 years. George was a member of the Illinois Sheriff's Association.
George played college football at both Florida State University and Southern Illinois University. His hobbies included horses, boating, jeeping and motorcycles. All of his hobbies included his family. He enjoyed cooking and was considered an excellent cook. He also loved just driving. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
George is survived by three children, his son, Roby (Delia) Podoriscki of Harrisburg, daughter, Cynthia Henley of Harrisburg and son Brent Henley of Harrisburg; seven grandchildren, Ross Bergman of Harrisburg, Brock Bergman of Harrisburg, Blane Podoriscki of Marion, Ann Marie Podoriscki of Harrisburg, Walker Henley of Harrisburg, Paisley Henley of Harrisburg and Shawnee Henley of Harrisburg; sister, Barbara Aaron of Moscow, Idaho; several nieces and nephews, and "Homer."
George was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019 at Reed Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Brad Vinyard officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
