Norma Jean (Hines) Hocevar of Marion, formerly of Junction

Norma Jean (Hines) Hocevar, age 84, of Marion, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at her home in Fifth Season Assisted Living of Marion.

She was born on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 1934, in Junction, Illinois, the daughter of William Edward and Jewel Estalee (Holt) Hines.

Norma graduated from Equality Township High School with the Class of 1952. She continued with her education, attending Business College in Evansville, Indiana.

She was united in marriage to Joseph R. Hocevar of Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, April 6, 1957, in Equality, and together they shared over 57 years of marriage until his death on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014. As a military family, they traveled extensively while raising their three daughters.

Norma enjoyed a career as a licensed Realtor in the 1960s and 1970s. Simultaneously, she served for 20 years as a Women's Army Auxiliary Officer. After her husband retired from the military, they moved back to southern Illinois where Norma worked as a legal secretary in Harrisburg.

Norma's Catholic faith was a very important part of her life. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Marion and also an active member of the church choir for many years.

After retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling extensively - to Hawaii numerous times, and Europe, including Greece, Italy, Poland and other nations.

Norma was an accomplished culinary artist. She was known for her excellent cooking of all kinds and was an excellent bread baker.

She loved her family and was always interested in all of their many activities, especially those of her grandchildren. She treasured the many memories, and those she leaves behind will continue to treasure the many memories that were created.

Norma's family would like to thank the wonderful people at Fifth Season Assisted Living and Hospice of Southern Illinois for their caring and support during Norma's illness.

She is survived by three daughters, Jolene (Hocevar) Fowler and husband Ernie of Harrisburg, Joy (Hocevar) Allen and husband Frank of Evansville, Indiana, and Teresa (Hocevar) Tarlton of Marion; five grandchildren, Lt. Col. Justin Tarlton of the United States Air Force, Brandon Tarlton of Marion, James Fowler, Michael Fowler and Ariel Allen, all of Evansville, Indiana; two great-grandchildren, Landon Fowler of Harrisburg and Kalena Tarlton of Marion; two sisters, Patricia (Hines) Frohock of Equality and Mickey (Hines) Karns and her husband Donald of Harrisburg; other extended family and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at the Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home in Marion, with the Rev. Father Brian Barker presiding. Visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service, starting at 11 a.m., at the funeral home.

Entombment will follow in the Egyptian Memorial Gardens Mausoleum of Energy, Illinois.
