John Richard Alongi of Du Quoin

John Richard Alongi, 92, of Du Quoin, passed away at 7:09 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

John had been owner and operator of Alongi's Italian Restaurant in Du Quoin.

He was a life member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin. John was a life member of the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Volunteer Foundation.

John was a director on the Du Quoin State Bank Board for 30 years, and he was the founder of Du Quoin Coats for Kids. John was an avid traveler and had been all over the world. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was born Jan. 1, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Guy and Rosalia (Finazzo) Alongi.

He married Betty Ann Kremer on Oct. 14, 1961 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and she survives.

John is survived by his wife, Betty, of Du Quoin; three children, Guy (Beth) Alongi of Du Quoin, Rosalie Alongi of Maryland Heights, Missouri and John (Cara) Alongi of Du Quoin; three grandchildren, John Alongi, Gabrielle Alongi and Grace Alongi, all of Du Quoin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Jerome Alongi and Ninfa Riggio.

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, with Father Joseph Oganda officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the church.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Du Quoin V.F.W. and American Legion and the Army National Guard.

Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Du Quoin.

Friends may make memorials to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or St. Bruno Catholic School, which will be accepted at the church or the funeral home.
