Melvin 'Tom' Hasty of Du Quoin

Melvin "Tom" Hasty, 76, of Du Quoin, passed away at 4:34 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2018 at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Tom had been a welder for the coal mines. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a United States Marine veteran of Vietnam.

He was born June 16, 1942 at Kankakee, Illinois, the son of Melvin Delmar and Lillian Marie (Patch) Hasty.

He married Betty June Gerstenschlager on May 23, 1970 at Joliet, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 11, 2015.

He is survived by his grandchildren Julia Unterreiner, Christopher Hasty and Mikey Unterreiner, all of Perryville, Missouri; grandchildren Bill (Jen) Queen, Tom Queen and Shondra Retko; adopted grandchildren, Wayne Harris Jr., Amanda Eggemeyer and Ashley Leaper, all of Du Quoin; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Linda Beatz of Du Quoin and Judy Hasty of Wilmington, Illinois; several nieces, nephews and good friends, including niece Shirley Anheuser and good friends Debbie and Wayne Harris.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Chris Hasty, stepson Bill Queen, sister Barb Tomlinson, brother-in-law Rich Beatz and nephew Richard Anheuser.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Lon McPherson officiating.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.

Burial will be in the Gerstenschlager Cemetery at Pinckneyville.

Friends may make memorials to V.F.W. Honor Guard or to the donor's choice, which will be accepted at the funeral home.
