James L. Simmons Jr. of Johnston City

JOHNSTON CITY - James L. Simmons Jr., 76, of Johnston City, passed away at 2:18 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2018, as the result of an automobile accident.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Murman & Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Pastor Earl Smith officiating. Prior to the service, visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Marion.

James was born on Dec. 7, 1941, in Chicago, the son of James Leon and Mary Winifred (McMullen) Simmons.

He was a retired self-employed truck driver.

James is survived by three daughters, Melinda Simmons of Johnston City, Cheryl Porter of O'Fallon, Missouri, and Kim Mackey of Nortonville, Kentucky; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Bill Barra and Terri Kimbro; two brothers, Greg (Janice) Simmons of Creal Springs and John Martin Simmons of Colp; three sisters, Sarah Hale of Colp, Becky Samples of Collinsville and Janet (Jim) Dawes of Libertyville, Texas; his loving girlfriend, Nancy Barger of Marion; his little buddy, Harley, his dog; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen Jeanette Simmons; his son, James Bryan Simmons; and his stepdaughter, Debbie Shore.

He will be sadly missed by many friends and family.
