Anna Birkner, formerly of Pinckneyville

PINCKNEYVILLE - Anna M. Birkner, 92, of Carbondale, formerly of Pinckneyville, passed away at 6:35 a.m., Saturday, June 23, 2018 at the Pinckneyville Community Hospital.

Anna had been a waitress at Luke's Cafe for several years. She had also worked at the Du Quoin State Fair. She was of the Baptist faith. Anna was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Moose Lodge and Lions.

Anna was born Sept. 2, 1925 in Benton, the daughter of Norman and Sadie (Holman) Smitha. She married Russell L. Birkner on Oct. 14, 1975 in Pinckneyville, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 2005.

She is survived by two daughters, Vickie (Larry) Clark of Du Quoin and Marla Mezel of Coulterville; four grandchildren, Leanna Boyd, Jeremy Clark, Brian Mezel and David Mezel; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Clark, Jonas Clark, Shane Boyd and Isabella Chandler; and a sister, Shirley Huggins of Marissa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.

Graveside services will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 30 at the Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin, with Bro. Gary Pate officiating. Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the cemetery.

Friends may make memorials to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which will be accepted at the funeral home.
