John Adam Yow of Carbondale

John Adam Yow, 95, of Carbondale passed away peacefully Sunday, March 4, 2018, at his residence, surrounded by his loving wife and family at his side.

John was born Thursday, June 1, 1922, in Carbondale to Adam and Nettie (Sandars) Yow.

On July 27, 1940, John married the love of his life, Marie Evelyn King, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and they spent more than 77 years together. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mary Frances (Deon Smith) Crawshaw of DeSoto and Linda Motion; two grandchildren, Rick Crawshaw and Kim Crawshaw; three great-grandchildren, Tiffany Cole, Ciara Cole and Tori Keller; and two great-great grandchildren, Essence Haynes and Athena Grace Hallman.

John was preceded in death by his six brothers, Herbert, Edward, Kenneth, Donald, Robert and Virgil; five sisters, Verdonna, Mary-Jane, Halloween, Beatrice and Frances; grandson Philip Brian; and son-in-law Gary.

John served our country patriotically and faithfully in the Illinois Reserve Militia during World War II. He received the meritorious service citation from the grateful citizens of the state of Illinois. In his civilian career, John was head of code enforcement and served as councilman for the city of Carbondale from 1985 until 1997. He retired from his committed service to the city of Carbondale in 1983.

John was a longtime member of the Masons and Shriners, as well as a Murdale Baptist Church parishioner. He was one of a kind. He loved to spend time with his family and numerous friends. John will forever be truly be missed by many.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2018, at Murdale Baptist Church in Carbondale with the Rev. Paul Hicks as the officiant. Mausoleum entombment followed right after services at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale. Visitation took place March 9 at the church.
