Fred W. Winders of Harrisburg

HARRISBURG - Fred W. Winders, 75, passed away at 1:36 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

He was born May 12, 1942, in Marion, Kentucky, to Clifton H. and Velda Irene (Brantley) Winders. On July 10, 1965, he married Linda Riegel.

Fred was a retired schoolteacher, who taught at Gallatin County High School.

He was a member of Harrisburg American Legion, VFW, Jaycees and Quail Unlimited. He also was past sponsor of the Beta Club at Gallatin County High School.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Winders of Harrisburg; daughter, Nicole Lyerla of Evansville, Indiana; grandson, Paul H. Lyerla of Evansville, Indiana; sister, Sonja Dixon of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; nephews, Neal Dixon of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Mitchell Demeter of Indiana; nieces, Dinah Taylor of Clarksville, Tennessee, Carli (Josh) Roozee of Indiana and Heather (Rich) Carter of Indiana; 10 great-nieces and great-nephews; father-in-law, Regnald Riegel of Harrisburg; and sister-in-law, Regina (Bill) Demeter of Crown Point, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Mildred Riegel; and two brothers-in-law, Bob Dixon and Larry Riegel.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg with the Rev. Ron George officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by Harrisburg and Carrier Mills American Legion posts and the U.S. Air Force. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at the funeral home.
