Helen Fay Hanna of Marion

MARION - Helen Fay Hanna, 85, passed away peacefully at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, in Shawnee Christian Village in Herrin.

She was born Oct. 15, 1932, in Carbondale, the daughter of Harry Orville and Lillian Pauline (Coleman) Vaughn.

Helen graduated in 1950 from Carterville High School and continued her education in secretarial skills at Southern Illinois University School of Technical Careers located south of Carterville.

She was united in marriage to Floyd Dean Hanna on Nov. 24, 1952, in Carterville, and together they shared over 46 years of marriage until his death on March 17, 1999.

Helen was a homemaker the majority of her lifetime, managing her home and seeing to the needs of her two children. She also worked part time as the lunchtime supervisor at Jefferson School in Marion.

She was a God-loving woman and member of Warder Street Baptist Church in Marion.

In her spare time, Helen enjoyed crocheting, word search puzzles and going to horse races with her husband and friends. She was always interested in all of her family's many activities and enjoyed the times they all would be together.

The many memories that have been created will now be cherished by those she leaves behind.

Survivors include her daughter, Theresa Hanna and life partner H.D. Welu of Marion and Glenwood, Minnesota; son, Craig Hanna of Marion; two brothers-in-law, William E. Hanna and wife Eva of Du Quoin and Norman E. Hanna and wife Mae of Hurst; three nieces, Belinda Green and husband David of Chatham, Sandy Gant and husband Fred of Du Quoin and Kara VanSkike and husband Garth of Mahomet; and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Graveside committal services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 24, in Hillcrest Cemetery in Carterville with the Rev. Dr. Dwayne Sheumaker presiding. Those wishing to attend should gather at the cemetery prior to 2 p.m.
